They say your life is like the seasons; that Autumn (the fall) is where we harvest, and Winter is when we go into hibernation. That is, we use that time for rest and introspection.

When you think about it, Winter is almost our time for rebuilding; down time where you evaluate where you are, where you want to go and who you aspire to become.

In essence, Winter is so important because it’s a time to reinvent oneself.

And in the Spring, everything is just waiting to explode with life because Spring is new life; new growth. It’s that time when we come out of hibernation, and a rebirth takes place.

So, what does this have to do with your life? Everything.

You were born to become something great, and it often takes a series of seasons to get there.

Let me give you an example of stages of growth and then I’ll dive further into the stages for you.

A Lot Can Be Learned From Nature

Let’s use the example of a tulip bulb. It makes it way through a harsh winter, withstanding frigid cold air, extreme living conditions, and dire circumstances.

Then, just like that, Spring happens, the environment reaches a particular state, and all of a sudden the tulip comes to life.

It’s not like the tulip bulb has been dead. It’s just been dormant; a product of its environment. It didn’t die. It only needed the right conditions to come to life.

People are the same way, and you experience “seasons” the same way. In fact, your environments are very temporary because we have several seasons, both in the short term (similar to the four seasons of the year) and in the long term (seasons of your life).

And in the moments of your life when you need to take that “down time” (a “winter”), use it to reflect and reinvent.

I know for a fact that everyone has within them that little bulb that’s been through the seasons, especially their own personal winter. And when the time is right, and you are ready, life happens. By life, I mean your potential, your talent, great opportunity and everything that exists inside of you already. These will all come to life.

Key Takeaway: Be appreciative of what you have and what you are to society. Be sure to give yourself a break; a second chance. New things are always coming, and you have to be prepared for them. Every season is preparing you for something greater should you choose to keep that perspective.

Prepare For What’s To Come

Each of you is facing things today that you weren’t facing one month ago or three months ago. At the same time, maybe you’ve overcome things recently that three or four months ago were a challenge.

Knowing this should give you the kind of insight to handle things in the present, while preparing for what’s to come. And by preparation, I don’t mean always living and thinking in the future, but by behaving with a certain mind frame in the present. Understand what the season calls for and go from there.

And when the conditions are right or conducive to sprouting for you, they will happen, and you will become that next version of yourself. When the time is right, you will rise; you will come out of the ground.

Keep in mind that this next level will require the right mind-state and spirit to handle it. So in the present, be sure to think about what you want, what are you going through, and how you can move forward to get to what you want.

In bringing it all back to seasons, remember, every year is a new opportunity to regrow. No matter what your circumstances are, try to put it in the context of seasons.

I am in this season, now, for a reason. I may not be able to control it, but seasons don’t last forever; they come and go.

And if you’re in a dry spell right now, be grateful for it. Take this as a time to evaluate, analyze, assess and be ready for your next season.

Be ready for the opportunity that comes out of it. Staying focused on the opportunity, future and what you can control while letting go of the things you can’t control (perceived failures or mistakes), will keep you more at peace and flow.

Let Go Of That Which You Can’t Control

Which leads me to my final point. What we have is the ability to control only a few of our circumstances. We can’t control the weather, commodity prices, the government, politics, the vast majority of what’s in our lives, but what we can control is ultimately what makes the difference. Not “a” difference, but “the” difference. Our minds make the difference.

Controlling the variables and knowing what you can control and what’s outside of your control is key. Knowing what to be upset about, stressed about or frustrated over and whether or not you have any control over that, is so key to living life, especially a digital one like mine.

The vast majority of challenges, obstacles and circumstances that come up, we can’t control. I can’t control the weather, the markets, or supply and demand, any more than you can, but I can control how my mind perceives it all and what it chooses to focus on.

Remember, Gandhi said,

“Your beliefs become your thoughts, Your thoughts become your words, Your words become your actions, Your actions become your habits, Your habits become your values, Your values become your destiny.”
