Friends,
The Tree of Life is one of those films that never did too well in the box office but is incredibly well written, acted, and produced.
It took home Official Selection from the Cannes Film Festival in 2011 and had
three Academy Award nominations (including Best Picture) but every time I mention the movie – it seems no one has even heard of it.
It’s one of my all-time favorite flicks.
Basically, it’s an impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 1950’s. The film follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt).
Jack (played as an adult by Sean Penn) finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith.
Anyway, the opening line is gripping and every few weeks, when lose hope in humanity and become afraid I go back and I watch the trailer… it’s incredible. Hard to put into words, actually.
It starts like this…
“There are two ways through life… The way of nature, and the way of grace. You have to choose which one you will follow. Nature only wants to please itself. Get others to please it too. Likes to lord it over them. To have its own way. It finds reasons to be unhappy when all the world is shining around it. And, love is smiling through all things. Unless you love, life will flash by. The only way to be happy is to love.”
Here’s the official trailer in HD. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do:) Have a great weekend!
